Did you know that 3 out of 4 New York residents support public financing of elections for statewide offices?
It’s true. In a Zogby poll conducted last year, 74% of New Yorkers indicated they favored public financing of elections, even after being presented with current prevailing arguments against the proposal.
Claims that public funding of elections would, “waste taxpayer dollars,” or be “welfare for politicians,” clearly are not resonating with the citizens of New York.
New Yorker’s overwhelming support for public financing is a clear rejection of these arguments, and of the status quo – a broken campaign system that allows the interests of wealthy campaign contributors and lobbyists, and not the people, to rule the halls of Albany.
2009 is the year we’ll change that.
